Dinner with CurlFriends β€οΈ

Hello y’all! As you can infer from the title, I recently went to a natural hair meet up! It was organized by Crystal of Long Island Naturals (hayyyy girl!) and Jenell (hayyyy girl!!) of KCCM was the special guest! Being that Jenell is new to the Island, we had to show out LOL

We went to a low key Jamaican spot called Dunn’s River Lounge. The event was about $40, which was an AMAZING deal when you hear about the things we went home with.

When we arrived, we were greeted by our gift bags, which were amazing! This event was sponsored by so many different natural hair care lines that we have all heard before, like SheaMoisture, Carol’s Daughter, and others.

We ate, drank, and were merry LOL

We began with playing Bingo (which I won!) and then Jenell began the raffle (which I also won!). But mostly, we just talked. It was truly an amazing time! Me and Jenell became besties, while Irene got kicked to the basement πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ (insider)

Just look at all the swag I came home with!

There’s also a picture from Pardon My Fro that I won in the raffle that is absolutely going in my bathroom!

Enjoy the rest of the pictures!

I can not wait until the next one!

Until next time,

Retrospection

Recently reading Mandisa’s latest post really inspired me to sit back and reflect on this year and where I am in my life at this moment.

Being the humans that we are it’s impossible to avoid heartbreaks, disappointments, set-backs that may spring up every once in a blue. I’m sure if we had the ability to control those things we would, but the reality of it is that they’re inevitable. And I’ve come to the point where I thank God for every bump in the road and giving me the strength to move forward toward his plan, that’s far more greater than I could have even conjured up in my mind for myself. Because every single defeat and every victory brought to where I am right now.

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, β€œplans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

I’m truly thankful for his patience with me and undying love. For always seeing me as his wonderful design, even though my actions didn’t always prove that to be so. I don’t deserve that one bit especially with my stubborn nature. I’m so thankful for the desire God has put in my heart to not only be better but put action behind it and Do better, for his glory.

Yes, of course I’m grateful for the physical blessings but I’m to the point where I love God not simply for everything he’s done for me, but just for being Him. His faithful, consistent, all powerful, loving (I can go on and on)…self.

Friends, I can tell you myself that I’m not a fan of change at all. I like to keep things simple. I like consistency (for the most part) but I’m realizing to just let God take the wheel and direct my life whenever or wherever he see’s fit. I can’t allow fear to control my life.

There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror! For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and [so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of love [is not yet grown into love’s complete perfection]. (‭1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭18‬ AMP)

I know here on this earth I’ll never reach perfection, but daily I’m trying to strive toward it.

I wish you all blessings and happiness in 2015! Have a wonderful holiday! Be safe!

Before We Head Into the New Year..

Hi guys! Happy Almost New Year! Oh,and Merry Christmas!

Before we head into the new year, I wanted to just have a sit down type discussion with you. Let’s all take a virtual seat on my floor LOL

You know that at DR, we don’t only talk about hair, or fashion, or style, but we also think it’s important to keep your spiritual life in check. Now that it’s going to be a new year soon, I want to take a look back on this past year and really reflect on it in the hopes that it will resonate with someone.

My spiritual life took a full on, headspin 345 degree turn this year. I know ya’ll are looking at me like, “345?! What?!” Let me explain. My spiritual life, I must say, took a loss for some time this year. You know when there’s a voice in the back of your head like, “Don’t do that!”, and you do it anyway. Stubbornness, it’ll kill you. So anyway, I did not listen to GOD (because that was the voice in my head) and embarked on a journey that I was never supposed to go on (or maybe I was, in hindsight.) Anyway, that happened and my spiritual life lessened. It was crazy because right before this, my relationship with God was the best it has ever been. And then this.

So, obviously, this THING ended very badly. I was left really distraught and I felt like I had no one. I didn’t even want to go to God because I felt so ashamed that I had done what He told me not to do. Y’all know how the story goes: I eventually ran back, on my knees for forgiveness, and he accepted me FLAWS AND ALL. That’s the kind of God I love and serve.

Not only did he accept me back with open arms, but he has been opening crazy doors for me in my life, and it’s to the point where it can be NOTHING BUT HIM. It’s like,

Me: “God, I really want this.”

God: “Aiight, bet.”

That simple.

And I bless him. You have no idea how much. He definitely doesn’t owe me a dag on thing, but he continues to rain showers of blessings on me for no other reason than His love, and eternal grace and mercy. Not to say that I wouldn’t continue to live life for Him if he didn’t bless me.

Sometimes I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone, y’know? I’m waiting on the other shoe to drop, just because that’s the kind of person I am. I’m human. I”m flawed. I have to repent every day, and sometimes, God literally allows me to bite my tongue (or cheek) because of my mouth. But he still loves me. And for that, I am thankful and am striving to get back to the place where I was before this. Can’t stop, won’t stop.

I pray that this post is an encouragement to someone who needs it, because I needed it when I was in my mess. God is love. Honestly, that’s what it boils down to.

Until next time,

Mandisa ❀

I’m Back!!….And I Missed You!

GUYS!!!!!! Hello, my beautiful people!!!!! I’m so excited to be writing this, let me tell you. I know it’s been a long time since I’ve written, but I’ve been going through some stuff. Nothing negative, don’t worry!

I had to complete my student teaching (which has been truly AMAZING and more than anything that I could ever ask for), and I had to pass my edTPA (which is just HORRENDOUS – but I passed it with the mastery level because God is good!!!), and I just had some personal stuff going on!

So let’s begin with an update about my hair. I have reached bra strap length πŸ™‚ It’s been about four months, so my hair was bound to grow. The thing is that I was able to retain the length, and I am pleased.

For the most part, I wore a wig as we transitioned here in the U.S from the summer to the fall. But sine about October on, I’ve been wearing my real hair out. The looks from people were hysterical, because they only knew my wig hair. Their faces were priceless.

Anyway, here is my updated routine as of December 2014.

I still wash my hair in four sections, but I co-wash more now. I haven’t shampooed in about a month now. I began co-washing simply because circumstances didn’t allow me to shampoo, and I figured I should try co-washing anyway. I will co-wash weekly after I deep condition with my favorite deep condish. When I am finished, I will add some Mixed Chicks leave-in (this is sort of a variable – if i feel like it). However, I will always, WITHOUT fail, add my moisturizer (Cantu) and oil (Olive). Recently though, I’ve been on the hunt for a styler because I can not usually achieve second day hair and I think that the culprit is that I don’t use any product with hold. I’m pretty basic on wash day usually. I bought a HUGE tub of gel to try a wash and go some weeks ago (more on that soon!), and I decided to use that as a styler. It’s been working pretty well.

That’s really it. I don’t do the extra but necessary things as often anymore (read: hot oil treatments, heavy protein treatments) simply because I’m lazy, but it’s cold, and my hair needs protection. So needless to say, I’ll be doing those.

So this has been an updated routine post, but I should mention to you guys that I met Jenell. No big deal.

NO BIG DEAL THAT I MET MY FAVORITE YOUTUBER WITH MY HAIR TEXTURE IN PERSON AND SHE TOLD ME I WAS “SO CUTE”

photo 1

She is really an amazing person, and so sweet! She had a pop up meet and greet at a local Target (like, 12 minutes away from me). You know I had to go and meet her, right? She was there promoting the Curls brand, and spoke about how she uses the Blueberry Bliss control paste on her twist outs to style. It was a really awesome talk, and I got a free sample of the Blueberry Curls control paste. It was awesome, and she gave me some good advice about growing the DivinelyRooted brand. I told her about y’all, so if she’s reading, HEYY GIRLLL! I don’t know if you guys know, but she moved closer to me recently and it looks like she’s going to be at a lot more local meet ups, which I LOVE.

Anyway, that’s it for now. I have tons of goodies for you guys, so stay tuned!

Until next time,

Mandisa

My Hairfinity Journey

Hello everyone! I hope you’re having a great week so far! I’m here today to bring you guys my Hairfinity journey. I took Hairfinity for about 5 months, from March to the end of July, and I’m here today to tell you guys all about it.
I stopped taking Hairfinity for a variety of reasons. For one, it’s very expensive. $25 a bottle adds up very, very quickly. Also, I didn’t really feel like it was doing anything for my hair. However, we all know that feeling mean nothing when compared to evidence. So here we go!
Here’s a picture of my fro before I started the pills :

There are definitely a lot of spaces, my hair is not as full as it could be, and it doesn’t look that thick.

Here’s a picture of my fro after Hairfinity (this was taken a week ago) :

See how much fuller it looks? No more open spaces, and it looks a lot thicker! Here’s another picture of my puff (after Hairfinity) :

See the fullness?? πŸ™‚

So yes, regardless of how I felt, I did see results. My hair definitely gained volume, fullness, and thickness. My hair grew horizontally.

My hair also grew vertically, but not much. At my last length check, I was at 10′ in the back, and as of yesterday, I’m 12′. So my hair grew vertically as well.

Here’s the thing though. I don’t attribute all of that growth to Hairfinity. I absolutely think that the vitamins had something to do with it, but during the time that I was taking them, I was also exercising more, eating healthier, and following a consistent hair regimen. I was also drinking a TON of water, at least a gallon a day. So I can’t be sure exactly how much of my growth was from Hairfinity. What I can tell you is that it was a good investment and a good experience.

Bottom line: if you have the money, go for it! But also make sure to follow a consistent hair regimen, exercise, and eat a good diet to reap all of the benefits from the vitamins.

Until next time,

Let’s Talk about…TEXTURE

Hello all, happy Monday! I hope you’re starting your week off well. I’m deciding to come to you guys with something that I couldn’t really speak about until I cut off my relaxed ends: my hair texture(s).
I think this deserves some background. So, when I had my relaxed ends, I thought that I knew what kind of texture I had. I would compare my hair texture to some of my favorite vloggers, like Yolanda Renee and whoissugar(they’re on the blogger/vlogger page). It’s funny because although I knew that I couldn’t be sure of my hair texture, I was! I pictured myself with the hair texture that I thought I had. It also didn’t help that every time I took a picture of my texture, it was from the back of my head.
Let me speak here, many naturals have MANY different textures in their head, which I knew and simply didn’t abide by, lol. So it was fitting that when I did my “big chop”, I was surprised, and yes, even a little disappointed.
My hair in the back is comprised of very loose curls. It is sooooooo easy to detangle the back of my head, because I literally finger comb once and that’s it. I also don’t have to use that much product on the back section of my hair.
The front of my hair is more “kinky.” That’s comprised of tighter curls that need a lot more product to do anything. I need a lot more product to work with it, and it takes a bit more time to finger detangle.
To be honest with you guys, it’s still taking me some time to get used to my “new” hair. I had those permed ends to hold on to for a whole year!
Here’s to embracing my curls, girls!

Until next time,
Mandisa ❀

Let’s Talk: Homemade Deep Conditioners

Hi guys! Happy Tuesday! Today I’m coming to you with a post about homemade deep conditioners. Fun Fact– I haven’t bought any deep conditioners in MONTHS! I’ve been mixing it up lately, and I think I’m a certified mixtress now. πŸ™‚

My mixtures are different every week, but there are some ingredients that I ALWAYS use. Here’s a list and why!
Honey
I use honey every week, without fail. It keeps my hair shiny and lustrous! It’s also a natural humectant, meaning that it draws moisture to the hair, which our hair is always in need of. It has anti-bacterial properties, and it can also be used as a cleanser. Sweet! (Pun intended)

Castor Oil
I have a bottle of JBCO that I should use more, because it’s great for the hair! It’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungicidal, so prolonged use of it will take care of most hair ailments. I had a lot of dandruff when I permed, and since transitioning, I’ve seen no flakes. It’s moisturizing, and it improves scalp circulation, which leads to growth! It can help control split ends, and also help thicken the hair.

Olive Oil
Ugh, let’s just talk about how I love this stuff. I use it in my DC’s, I use it to seal, I use it for everything. It can be used for shine and softness.

Eggs
Yep, I saved the best for last! Eggs are a superfood for your hair! They are a FAB source of protein, so they pack your hair with some strength, while also imparting shine.

So there it is, beauties! These are my homemade DC ingredients that I always use. There are some others, but that’s another post!

Until next time,
Mandisa ❀
